From Westover Down Looking West Get Out and About

February is the perfect time to support country pubs, especially those that serve local beer!  Go and ask for a pint of Yates’, Goddards or Ventnor.  Some of our favourite pubs are:

  • The Buddle Inn, Niton Undercliff
  • The Travellers Joy, Northwood
  • The Pointer, Newchurch
  • The Volunteer, Ventnor
  • The Bonchurch Inn, Bonchurch
  • The White Lion, Niton
  • The Red Lion, Freshwater

There’s no better excuse for a pint than working up a thirst on a good walk (no matter how short).  The photos on this page were taken on the last Sunday in January, at Westover Down and Tennyson Down.

Brighstone Woods in WinterIn the Fields and Hedgerows

Spring is starting to appear, with the first celandines, primroses and snowdrops in the hedges. Shoots of dog’s mercury and wild garlic (ramsons) are coming through – the leaves of the ramsons aren’t quite big enough to pick yet, but they’ll soon be big enough to add pep to a winter salad.

Now that most of the cabbages and cauliflowers have been picked, last year’s lambs are fattening-up, eating off the tops.
