Buy With Confidence

local food means higher quality, less food miles and less packaging waste

Jackie Phillips and Rachel Foy started The Real Island Food Company in 2007, to make it easier to buy quality local food. We want to be happy about the food we buy and eat, and confident about its provenance.

Local Economics

We want to support the local economy by buying from local companies and farmers. Paying a proper price keeps local companies in business, sustaining local jobs. Farming maintains our landscape, and the pastoral beauty is one of the things that locals and visitors love about the Isle of Wight.

Seasonality

Our product range changes regularly, depending on what’s in season locally. Buying food when its in season locally means that its fresher, and fresher food tastes better and contains more goodness.

You won’t find year-round availability of specialities that should be seasonal treats, like asparagus, sweetcorn or crab. Going back to cooking seasonally can be hard at first, but we’ve got lots of recipe ideas get your mouth watering.

Quality

Many of our suppliers have won ‘Great Taste Awards’ in national competitions, so they’re as good as or better than big brands.

Our meat is all hung properly – 21 to 28 days for beef, up to 7 days for lamb/hogget and up to 5 days for pork. Hanging tenderises the meat and concentrates the flavours.

Packaging and Waste

We try to use a little packaging as possible. We’ll deliver to you in a cool-bag that we reuse time and again. Loose items will be packed in paper or compostable plastic bags, and we only use plastic when there is no choice. Cardboard boxes are reused by suppliers or recycled and we compost our vegetable waste.

You don’t have to agree with us about all of this, but we hope you will agree that the food we offer is some of the best you’ll eat!
